About Lacrosse

Lacrosse is often described as the fastest game on two feet. With its quick pace, exciting goals, and skilful teamwork, it’s a sport that is growing in popularity across Australia — and right here at Newport Lacrosse Club. Whether you’re curious about trying something new, want a fun way to stay fit, or are looking for a community to join, lacrosse has something for everyone.

The Basics of Lacrosse

At its core, lacrosse is played with a long-handled stick called a crosse and a small rubber ball. Players use their stick to pass, catch, and shoot the ball with the aim of scoring goals while stopping the other team from doing the same.

Lacrosse is a team sport that rewards speed, agility, and strategy. Depending on the version being played, games can take place outdoors on a full-sized field, indoors, or on smaller turf fields.

"Lacrosse isn’t just a game — it’s speed, skill, and teamwork coming together in every pass, every goal, and every moment on the field."

Women’s Lacrosse in Australia

Women’s lacrosse is one of the most popular versions of the sport at Newport and across the country. It’s known for being fast, skilful, and very spectator-friendly:

  • Shallower stick pockets make ball control more challenging, encouraging slick passing and running plays.
  • Less body contact than in the men’s game means more emphasis on speed, positioning, and teamwork.
  • High scoring and constant action keep both players and supporters on their toes.

It’s an excellent entry point for new players, with plenty of opportunities to develop skills, fitness, and friendships along the way.

Box Lacrosse – Right Here at Newport

One of the most exciting versions of lacrosse is box lacrosse — and Newport Lacrosse Club is home to PJ Lynch’s dedicated Box facility, the best in the country.

Box is played on a smaller, enclosed turf field, either indoors or outdoors, which makes for a high-intensity game:

  • Faster play with more shots on goal.

  • Physical battles for possession in the tight space.

  • Quick passing and sharp shooting are crucial.

Because Box lacrosse is more physical, players wear protective padding, helmets, and gloves for safety — similar to ice hockey. This equipment allows the game to be fast and tough while keeping players protected.

PJ Lynch’s Box facility has become a hub for this exciting version of the sport in Australia, attracting players who love the speed, skill, and energy of the game.

Sixes – The Olympic Version

Another exciting format is Lacrosse Sixes, a fast-paced version designed for international competition and the Olympics. Played with six players per side on a smaller field, it’s:

  • Fast and exciting, with constant scoring opportunities.

  • Easy to learn, thanks to simplified rules.

  • Great for schools, social comps, and beginners.

At Newport, we embrace Sixes as a fun and accessible way for people of all ages to get involved.
